Who We Are -- Our History
Disciples churches were
first born of two religious movements of the American frontier which took issue
with human inventions, or "tests of faith" which separated Christian
from Christian. In the early 1800's Thomas Campbell, his son, Alexander, and
Barton Stone came to realize that Jesus intended his church to be one church,
meeting in different places.
They understood that,
though people might disagree with one another about certain interpretations of
the Bible, we all worship the same God and follow the same Master. Excluding a
fellow Christian from worship and fellowship based on a difference in belief
was not acceptable.
The Campbells and Stone
independently withdrew from the denominations in which they were ministers to
re-establish the church as Christ had intended it to be. By the 1830's, the two
movements discovered one another and joined to work together.
Today, the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) continues to work towards that one church which Jesus
founded. As a national church and in local congregations, we work for
co-operation among all churches in a non-judgmental and loving atmosphere.
Disciple Christian Church
was founded in January of 1975 to expand this important work to the Newcastle,
Tri-City and Southwest Oklahoma City area. In the past 25 years, hundreds of
members have grown spiritually in the care of Disciple Christian. And numerous
individuals and families have received our ministries.
We are seeking to be an
ever-increasing presence, bringing God's healing and ministry to our community.
You are invited to become a
part of this growing witness as we continue to write our history for the next
quarter-century and into the new millenium!
