Who We Are -- Our Beliefs

We are a church which believes in a living God and the lordship of God's son, Jesus Christ.

Beyond that simple affirmation, we are a church of pilgrims trusting in Christ's promise, "Seek and you will find." We work together, share with one another and trust each other as we seek an understanding of God's love and purpose for us as individuals and as a community of faith.

As members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we resist creeds and other doctrinal methods of testing our faith. Instead, we rely solely on the simple profession, "We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. And we accept him as our personal Lord and Savior."

In other words, we are not a church which will ever tell you what you must believe.

We prefer to share what we individually believe through our preaching, through our teaching and through our shared witness. And we prefer to listen to your own views, trusting that you will have a unique understanding through which we can all grow.

This is because we take seriously the commandment to love God with all of our heart, all of our spirit, all of our strength and all of our mind. We do not neglect or reject the mind's role in living faithfully. We understand that people of good faith can differ in understanding the Scriptures. And we respect the integrity of individuals who understand differently than we do, as much as those who agree with us.

Our faith is rooted in the Bible. As a record of Jesus' teachings and of God's acts of creation, love and salvation, it is the first place we turn to understand who God is and who God would have us be.

We are also a church of spirit, which trusts that God's activity in the world continues today and that God is personally involved in each of our lives. We seek God's guidance not only through study but through prayer and spiritual growth. We expect God to love us, encourage us, support us and move us. We trust in God's forgiveness and grace when we meet life's challenges.

Finally, we are a church of action. We believe that our faith motivates us to serve, both among our members and outside of our church walls. We are continually involved in both short-term and long-term discovery of God's will for us as a church. As we grow in our understanding, we plan ministries to serve our members, our community and our world.

Of course, this is in black and white. To truly understand what we believe and how we put our beliefs into action, you are invited to share with us in worship, study and fellowship.

Perhaps you will find that Disciple Christian is the church you have been looking for to grow and to serve.

You are invited to join us this Sunday.
